## Adding Achieve content to D2L

Adding assignments from your Achieve course creates a link to those assignments in your D2L course and allows grades for those assignments to sync with the D2L gradebook. We recommend you add at least one link to your course using this method. Students will be able to click on the link to enroll in your Achieve course.

## Navigate to the D2L Course Builder by either of the following methods

### From Course Admin:

In the navigation bar, select **More Tools** and then **Course Admin.** Within that page, you will find **Course Builder** (under Site Resources if viewed by Category or alphabetically if viewed by Name)

### From Content:

Navigate to **Content** and select the top level of the **Table of Contents**. Just under the page title, there is a button labelled **Related Tools**. Click this button and select **Course Builder.**

If shown a Course Builder Welcome page, click the **Start **button (note that this page is generally only shown once unless you select the option to **always show this welcome page**.)

In the left pane of the page, in the second grouping of items (**Add Content)**, you will find a red ‘wing’ M shape. If you hover over that icon, you will see a tool tip stating **New Macmillan Course Builder**. Click this icon.

Drag and drop the Macmillan Course Builder Tool into a module where you would like to include Macmillan content links.

Achieve deep integration allows for Achieve assignments to be added to D2L content modules alongside any other D2L content. Visit for instructions on how to create D2L content modules, you can see the D2L help documentation:  <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[How to create a module](https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/le/content/instructor/create_module.htm)</span></u>. You can also <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[create modules in the course builder tool](https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/le/course_builder/instructor/course_builder_interface_overview.htm)</span></u>.

Under Add Content, drag the Macmillan Course Builder Tool into the module where you'd like to add Achieve content. Release the tool with your mouse when the module is highlighted.

## Prepare your content before adding to D2L

Before proceeding any further, make sure to assign Achieve items as shown in the creating Macmillan Achieve content article

## Locate items assigned in the Achieve course

Achieve content that has been assigned with a due date will populate in the Assignments folder. Click the orange drop-down arrow to expand the folder. These items will create gradebook columns in D2L after being added.

- Grey, unbolded font indicates that items are available to be added to D2L.
- Items with a bold font have already been added to D2L. If an item has a bold font, but you’re not seeing it in a D2L content module, it may have been deleted from the module but not fully removed from the course. Please see the LMS troubleshooting article for instructions on <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[removing content from D2L](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Deep-integration-troubleshooting-for-instructors#removingD)</span></u>.

## Adding ungraded content to D2L

Items added to a unit in your Achieve course but not assigned are available for selection within the unit folders. Expand the folders using the drop-down arrows to select non-graded content.

## Adding links to e-book snippets

If you add an individual e-book snippet to D2L, students will only see that portion of the e-book when they click the link. They will not be able to continuously scroll through the entire e-book.

If you would like to give students the option to navigate through the e-book, add a single link to the entire Achieve e-book as shown in the next section.

## Links to course homepage, e-book, and student registration

You can also add the following links to your D2L course. These links will not create gradebook columns in D2L.

- Achieve Home.
- Achieve E-book.
- Student Registration - Start Here.

Both the Achieve Home and Student Registration - Start Here links will take students to their Achieve course homepage. Clicking on one of these links, or any other Achieve content item link in D2L, will initiate the registration process for the student.

Currently, using one of these links is the only way for students to access the Achieve course homepage from D2L. They will not be able to navigate to the homepage from other Achieve assignments added to D2L.

If your Achieve course includes an e-book, you can add the Achieve E-book link to take students directly to their e-book within Achieve. Students can also access the e-book through the Achieve or Student Registration - Start Here links.

## Important notes about grade sync

Students must connect their D2L and Achieve accounts for their grades to sync with the D2L gradebook. See the <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[registration instructions](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Instructors-Integrate-Achieve-courses-with-D2L-Brightspace#registration)</span></u> below to present this information to students.

Achieve grades will sync automatically *but not instantaneously*. It may take several hours for new grades to sync. If you need to see new grades in D2L right away, <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[perform a grade refresh](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Macmillan-Course-Tools-in-your-D2L-Brightspace-course#grade_refresh)</span></u>.

## For Writing assignments

If you add Achieve Writing assignments with peer review to D2L, please see the help article <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[Using Achieve Writing assignments with D2L/Brightspace deep integration](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Achieve-Writing-assignments-with-D2L-Brightspace-deep-integration)</span></u> to learn how to set a due date for the peer review exercise in your LMS.

## When grades appear

As soon as a grade appears in your Achieve gradebook, it will be passed to D2L during the next automatic or <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[manual grade sync](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Macmillan-Course-Tools-in-your-D2L-Brightspace-course#grade_refresh)</span></u>.

Grades will appear in the Achieve gradebook according to the In-Progress Work <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[gradebook setting](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Achieve-Gradebook-settings#in_progress)</span></u>, which controls whether grades appear for in-progress work or only after the due date has passed. Please note that if you have your Achieve gradebook configured to only show grades after the due date passes, grades for assignments completed prior to the due date will not appear in the Achieve or D2L gradebook, which may confuse students. Make sure to be transparent about your grading policy so your students know not to expect to see the grade until after the due date.

Note: Assessments with a Test/Quiz <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[grading policy](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Sapling-Learning-View-or-change-mobile-assignment-grading-policies)</span></u> will always have the grades hidden from students until after the due date.

## Changing due dates or point values

If you wish to set due dates and/or points for any Achieve items, you must do so in Achieve and not in D2L. During an automated grade sync, manual grade refresh, or content refresh, due dates or points set in D2L will either be replaced with the due dates and points from Achieve or cause the grade sync to fail entirely.

After <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[changing due dates or points](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Achieve-Assign-an-item-or-change-assignment-settings?r=529&ui-knowledge-components-aura-actions.KnowledgeArticleVersionCreateDraftFromOnlineAction.createDraftFromOnlineArticle=1)</span></u> in the Achieve course, <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[perform a content refresh](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Macmillan-Course-Tools-in-your-D2L-Brightspace-course#content)</span></u> to make the same changes appear for the corresponding items added to D2L.

## Changing grades

If you wish to manually enter or edit grades for student assignments, you must do so in Achieve and not in D2L. During an automated grade sync or manual grade refresh, grades set in D2L will be replaced with the grades from Achieve.

Change grades in the Achieve course, then<u><span style="color: #0000ff">[ perform a grade refresh](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Macmillan-Course-Tools-in-your-D2L-Brightspace-course#grade_refresh)</span></u> to make the same changes appear for the corresponding items added to D2L.

## Gradebook categories

If you are using gradebook categories in your course, they must be <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[set in Achieve](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Achieve-Assign-an-item-or-change-assignment-settings?r=529&ui-knowledge-components-aura-actions.KnowledgeArticleVersionCreateDraftFromOnlineAction.createDraftFromOnlineArticle=1)</span></u>, not D2L. Gradebook categories will transfer to D2L when the assignments are added to your D2L course.

Making changes to gradebook categories in D2L can interfere with automatic grade sync. If you need to edit the name of a gradebook category after you have already added an assignment with it to D2L, including any changes to capitalization or punctuation, or if you need to change which categories are associated with which assignments, follow the instructions below.

Make any necessary <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[changes to gradebook categories](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Achieve-Gradebook-settings?r=529&ui-knowledge-components-aura-actions.KnowledgeArticleVersionCreateDraftFromOnlineAction.createDraftFromOnlineArticle=1)</span></u> in the Achieve course first.

In the D2L gradebook, <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[delete the gradebook columns](https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/le/grades/instructor/delete_grade_item.htm)</span></u> for any items where you made changes to the category. You can also delete the old category if it is no longer needed.

Run a <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[content refresh](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Macmillan-Course-Tools-in-your-D2L-Brightspace-course#content)</span></u> and a <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[grade refresh](https://mhe.my.site.com/macmillanlearning/s/article/Using-Macmillan-Course-Tools-in-your-D2L-Brightspace-course#grade_refresh)</span></u> to regenerate the gradebook column(s) with the updated gradebook categories.

## Gradebook calculations

Calculations like dropping lowest scores or weighted percentages do not transfer from Achieve and must only be set in D2L. Follow these instructions for setting <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[Weighted Percentages](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O3NzpQBSb0)</span></u> (Video) and <u><span style="color: #0000ff">[Dropping Lowest Scores in a category](https://community.brightspace.com/s/article/000012113#ra02)</span></u> in D2L.

If you have any items assigned in Achieve as Extra Credit, the grade calculation for those items will not transfer to D2L. The Extra Credit item will instead behave as a normal graded item in D2L. You can set up a calculation within D2L for the item to be treated as Extra Credit.
